Course description:
This qualification is part of the new children’s homes regulations which came into force in April 2015. This course will enable you to develop the knowledge and skills needed when working with children and young people in a residential childcare setting, including an understanding of child and young person development. You will also be able to gain essential skills and knowledge to support children and young people in residential childcare settings, including: wellbeing and resilience, positive relationships and attachments, health and safety, sexual exploitation, communication, positive behaviour and positive outcomes.
Who is the course suitable for?
The qualification is aimed at a range of learners who are thinking of working in a residential childcare setting.
Entry requirements:
Learners will need to be working, volunteering or on practical placement in a residential childcare setting, as they need to show competence in both knowledge and skills. The learner must live in England and be over 19 years of age. For those learners who have no previous experience of working in residential childcare, it is recommended that 400 hours be spent in a Real Work Environment.
How is the course delivered?
Candidates work through an online platform, so there is no need to attend the college to gain the qualification. You will be guided to obtain the resources that contain the knowledge needed to meet the assessment requirements of the course and you can also gain further knowledge through research and practical skills in the workplace. Assessments are based on knowledge and skills. Learners should complete the course within 9 months.
Course content:
The course provides a broad range of the knowledge and understanding required in residential childcare settings about the development of children and young people. This includes areas such as safeguarding and protecting children and young people in residential childcare settings, risk management in residential childcare and subjects to support the development of socially aware behaviour with children and young people in residential childcare settings.
Progression opportunities:
Having successfully achieved this qualification, the learner may wish to progress on to further training, such as courses in leadership and Management in Health and Social Care Level 5.
